In the world of grassroots football, dedicated individuals like Brett Cartlidge shine as unsung heroes. Brett's journey from a passionate football player to a nurturing youth coach at CHARS Youth FC is a testament to his commitment to the sport and his desire to share his experience with the next generation. In this article, we will delve into the inspiring story of Brett Cartlidge, football coach and father who has played an integral role in the development of CHARS Youth FC's Under 11's team.
A Passion for Football
Brett's love affair with football began in his late teens when he donned the jersey for the Highgate Redwings. From the late '90s through the late 2000s, he dedicated his weekends to the beautiful game, playing both Saturday and Sunday morning football. Despite taking a hiatus to serve in the Royal Air Force (RAF), Brett always found his way back to the pitch whenever he could. While he occasionally represented RAF station football teams, cricket also captivated his interest during this period.
However, life took Brett down a different path when he decided to prioritise family life. He embraced the responsibilities and joys of being a husband and father, with his son Ronny taking centre stage in his life. Nonetheless, Brett's passion for football never waned; it simply transformed into a new endeavour.
A Coach is Born
Brett's transition from player to coach began with a humble act of volunteering. He joined Joe Westmacott's Sunday morning Soccer School as a helper, eager to contribute to the growth of young talents. Recognising his dedication and passion for the sport, Brett was entrusted with managing CHARS Youth FC's newly created U7 Blue team for the 2019-20 season.
This coaching opportunity was more than just a way to give back to the sport he loved; it was also a chance to bond with his son Ronny. Brett saw it as a golden opportunity to share his wealth of experience and knowledge with young players who were taking their first steps onto the pitch.
The CHARS Youth FC Journey
Brett's journey with CHARS Youth FC has been a fulfilling one. Starting with the U7 Blues in the 2019-20 season, he quickly became an integral part of the coaching team. His role was not just about teaching the technical aspects of the game but also instilling values such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and discipline.
"I feel like family life and hobbies are both grassroots football which doesn't leave a lot of time for anything else," Brett explains, reflecting on the time and effort he invests in his coaching role. "I put a lot of research and resources and effort into grassroots, which takes up a lot of personal time, which is very important as much as it is a burden, and I have an extremely understanding partner."
Beyond Football
While football occupies a significant portion of Brett's life, he is also a man of many talents and interests. He finds joy in DIY projects, exploring woodwork and metalwork, and spending quality time with his family. Family days out, evening barbecues, movie nights, and trips away are all treasured moments that complement his football-centric life.
Brett Cartlidge's journey from a dedicated football player to a passionate grassroots coach is a story of love, dedication, and giving back to the sport that has brought him so much joy. As he continues to shape the young talents of CHARS Youth FC's Under 11's team, Brett embodies the spirit of grassroots football – nurturing future stars and fostering a love for the game.
