In the world of sports, moments of sheer joy and triumph are often balanced by instances of profound sadness and adversity. On Monday, October 2nd, we were all deeply saddened to learn about a tragic incident that occurred during a Football Tournament organised by the District at The Sele School in Hertford.
During the Tournament, as the evening sky darkened, a sudden and unexpected lightning strike affected several people, including one adult and one student from a local secondary school. Both individuals were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. Our hearts go out to them and their families during this difficult time.
"The Sele School, its dedicated staff, and the entire school community wish to express our sincere gratitude to the emergency services, parents, and staff who were present at the tournament and acted swiftly to assist those affected. The response and support shown by the first aiders who were on hand, waiting for the emergency services to arrive, were nothing short of remarkable." - Source: https://www.sele.herts.sch.uk/
In times of crisis, it is heartening to witness the resilience, unity, and compassion that the football community can display. We were deeply moved by the actions of all those involved, and it reinforces the idea that football is more than just a game; it's a community, a family that comes together in moments of adversity.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of safety protocols in place during outdoor events. While we cannot control the weather, we can ensure that the safety of players, spectators, and officials remains our top priority. Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we wish them a swift and full recovery.
Football is more than just goals, tackles, and victories. It's about camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the strength of the community that surrounds it. We hope that the affected individuals will find solace in the support of the football family.
As we reflect on this sombre event, let us also celebrate the resilience and unity that make the football community so special. Together, we can weather any storm, on or off the pitch, and emerge stronger and more united than before. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we stand in solidarity with them and their families during this challenging time.
With deepest sympathies and unwavering support,
Joe Westmacott Chairman
